GAME PLAN til May 27 at Tate Modern London
Late Italian artist, Boetti has a solo show at Tate Modern this spring featuring his famous embroidered series of maps, “Mappa”.
From 1971 until his death in 1994, Boetti commissioned embroidery from local artisans in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He always left the choice of colors and design to the artisans.
Their choices and the historical and political events that affected the world are reflected in the maps: certain maps leave out Israel which is not recognized as a state by Taliban rule in Afghanistan.
In the map pictured above the artisans unexpectedly chose pink as the color for the oceans, presumably because, having lived in landlocked Afghanistan, they are not familiar with oceans or traditional mapping.
If only we were in London this spring to visit the work of this great Italian artist!
