A Sit Down With Blood Is The New Black Founder and Curator

Renee Ruinn’s enlightening one-on-one with Blood Is The New Black’s founder and curator.

For those of you who haven’t been paying attention, the art you see on BITNB’s perfect-fitting shirts and dresses are artists that Mitra Shady Khayyam has chosen.

The woman has impeccable taste. We are also told she is disarmingly funny and kind. Who doesn’t love a funny babe?

As the brand’s showroom we have the pleasure of seeing and working with her every so often. But for those of you who are not lucky enough to be acquainted, this interview with Renee Ruin  paints a pretty accurate portrait.

Here’s a really great excerpt from the interview:

From cult icons to art pieces to dark gothic looks. Is it important to you that the company continues to showcase different and unique designs and artists rather than just the same homogenized niche look?
Of the upmost importance. I am not a one dimensional person and I don’t think our customers are either. It’s really fun to be able to put together different looks. One day I dress like a lot lizard, the next a fancy Persian lady (cause I am), or like a total label whore. Blood is the New Black is about celebrating artists and designers, not fashion or trends, so I always try to mix it up. It’s nice to have something for everyone - even if it is a little schizophrenic.
Lot lizard or fancy Persian lady, yep, that’s her.
