My score came mostly from my medicine and makeup bag as well as my shoe closet and mp3 player. It’s important to be a conscious consumer, abstain from self-involvement, try to see the bigger picture and realize that in today’s globalized economy we are all connected. Our actions here can affect the lives of people across the ocean.

Here are nine sustainable apparel brands that are turning Made in Bangladesh from a mark of shame into a badge of pride.

After the Rana plaza building collapse, the death toll continues to mount past 1,100. What can we do about it? Boycott the brands associated (Walmart, H&M, Mango…), demand that Bangladesh pass basic labor laws, and buy from these companies instead! There are good options out there, we just have to support them!!

New 100% NY Stockist, Modavanti:

Modavanti is 100% NY’s latest stockist. They became enamored of Daniel Silverstein’s sustainable designs on Fashion Star (as did most viewers) and have featured him on their site and its blog. In th article, they give us the skinny on his design process and signature “no waste” techniques.

We love following the evolution of 100% NY

Like any startup, establishing your brand in the beginning is tricky and a process of trial and error. This was especially true for Daniel as he consciously strived to minimize waste. The process has come a long way since he started. Initially, Daniel would come up with a design, cut out a rectangle of material and wing it. At a certain point, his business partner Marge would take over and strategically place the leftover scraps in ways that enhanced the design itself. As this process repeated itself, it got more and more streamlined. Now, Daniel says, they color-code everything with sharpies and have the system down to a science.

With a little effort, Daniel’s design was able to perfect the “no waste” process that is characteristic of his line. At the risk of redundancy, we genuinely believe this is the future of the industry.

We are too. You may not own Joe Fresh, but the chances of an unethically produced fast-fashion garment in your closet are high. Please ask your own favorite clothing company to show us their own factories, so we can prevent tragedies like this from happening, and maybe have a little transparency as to who exactly makes our clothes, and how.

This has been our favorite episode thus far. Daniel came out on top in a major way! Few would have had the patience to deal with Johana, but he was able to work around her..ahem.. intensity to create a beautiful sequin top that paired beautifully with Johana’s long pencil skirts.

Here is one of the designs that Saks bought for an extraordinary $185,000.

We especially love the trend-driven black and white sequin top and its loose fitting shape. It’s still available on Saks’ online store.

If they weren’t already thinking it the rest of the contestants will definitely be looking at Daniel as the one to beat.

If there are two things we believe in at Live With Us they’re the power of individuals as a force for change and benevolence. Housing Works, a thrift store devoted to helping, advocating and providing employment for people living with HIV and AIDS, embodies this devotion to people and change. If we all had the same strong faith in our individual power, we truly believe the world would be different. We will get there.

After the Reuse Before Recycle post, we thought it would be great to feature our favorite thrift store in New York as thrifting is one of the main ways fashionistas are involved in reusing and general world-saving.

Housing Works uses the proceeds generated from selling donated items (in good condition) to advocate on behalf of the 1.1 million American living with HIV. They also provide free medical care and housing to those who are homeless, an estimated 3.4% homeless Americans are HIV positive compared to 0.4% in the general population. They’re business model is built in such a way that allows them to employ many of those they help.

They have several locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but for the New York impaired they also have an amazing selection they by auction online. We spotted Dior and Alexander Wang bags. And this beauty:

Blood is the New Black's Artist Driven Fashion Featured in The StarPhoenix:

Propelling the careers of emerging artists is the focus of Blood is the New Black, a Los Angeles-based arts collective founded in 2004 by Mitra Khayyam “to provide an alternative to traditional fashion lines.”

The clothing line showcases the work of artists from all over the globe, Khayyam said. “We started with two; now we have 75 artists.”

“We look for artists who have unique styles,” she added.

Artists are allowed total creative freedom, she explained, so they can design their tees however they want, right down to the tag that bears their name.

“Our artists receive royalties from every sale,” Khayyam said.

Reuse and Reduce Before Recycling

Reusing, along with reducing, are the oft forgotten R’s of the 3, now immemorial, earth-friendly tips children are taught in grade school and yet they come before the most popular R — Reuse, Reduce and then Recycle.

Recycle is and should be the last tool for sustainability. Recycling is a process that requires more energy use, more waste and more pollution than simply reusing. Why? Because recycling is creating something new out of something old. Reusing is extending the life of the item, be it an old tee used as a cleaning rag or the classic bathtub couch.

It’s important to spread awareness about the benefits of reusing and reducing over recycling. Recycling is the least effective of the three. If you can reuse, do it.

We would love to see these concepts go mainstream, perhaps even become mandatory in the form of a state or federal law, at least when it comes to businesses.

Live With Us is a showroom dedicated to promoting the two most important R’s in the fashion industry. We only represent designers who embody our showroom’s mission: 100% NY is a line named for designer, Daniel Silverstein’s commitment to reducing textile waste and Belinda Pasqua’s line of leather bags and jackets, The Sway, is entirely centered around the process of reuse; the leather used to make each of her bags or jackets is upcycled, always.

Our interest in reuse and reduce is truly more than a cause, it is a lifestyle. Recycling has helped tremendously. It does keep waste from ending up in landfills, it saves trees and spares nonrenewable resources. These are all very important reasons for recycling religiously as if the earth depended on it — oh wait, it does!

But if you’ve become a recycling pro take the next steps, reuse and reduce, make them the first steps.
